The Sea, the Symbol I Belong To

Digital Painting, 2022
A visual record of the sea appearing throughout my work before becoming part of La Morada.
I always saw art as a hobby, although, in truth, it was more like a place where I could quietly showcase my skills and perfectionism. I was admired and applauded, and I didn’t have to expose myself; I only had to replicate things that already existed.
But in 2021, following what I would describe as an almost existential crisis, I began questioning why. The why behind everything, but especially myself—what I was doing and who I was.
And I came face to face with the harsh truth that I was a product of my environment, my upbringing, society, religion, and the time I was born into. So I decided to go in search of my truth, my voice, my most authentic self.
And in my first attempt at exploring that, I completely set technique aside and gave my hand over to truth. That was when the sea appeared for the first time.

Today I'm going to learn how to stay in the deep.
It was a comic-like series in which I allowed myself to be completely carried away. The only decision I made was to use watercolor, letting it flow and removing the temptation to fall back into perfectionism.

And ever since, it hasn't let me go, even though I have tried.
Many times...
But whenever I try to move closer to my truth and create from the most sincere part of myself, it appears. I have even tried to use it as a concept: through abstract forms, blurred bodies, dissolved figures, mist. And without realizing it, I always end up returning to the shape of the sea.

And what I find interesting is that it doesn't only appear when I make art. Since 2020, when I began keeping a record of my dreams, I have noticed that whenever I dream about something important or symbolic, the sea is somehow there.

So today, many years after repeatedly trying to resist it, I have decided to surrender to this symbol and its form. I am letting myself be completely carried by this force, and allowing the current to take me wherever I am meant to go.
